Rewrite: A youth poetry organization
Rewrite is Harris-Stowe State University’s student poetry organization which provides a weekly workshop to develop poets, allow them a platform to express themselves and serve as a safe space for anyone needing to share and/or be heard. Rewrite was created in 2019 and has been active on campus since, I have served as the advisor for the last 3 years.
The objective of its creation was to provide a space for lovers of poetry, poets, spoken word artists and writing. Our goal is to expand minds, vocabulary, voices, confidence, public speaking and writing skills. We work to better our members in areas such as creating, writing and performing. However, we create an atmosphere that doesn’t force anyone to perform publicly in case they just want to use the organization as their safe space.
As an organization, we do a wide variety of things including but not limited to participating in and performing at corporate, community and school based events. Some of our largest collaborations have been with the St. Louis Art Museum, the Woke Brand, The City of St. Louis, Lit Linguistics, Some Things Must Be Heard and more. We host weekly workshops at our meetings, and fun campus activities for our students and community members such as Rewrite the Reset, open mics, and Outlet: a poetry and painting experience.

Beauty in our Backyard
Beauty in our Backyard started as a theme for a poetry video I had our poetry org, Rewrite create last year and this year I was able to turn it into HSSU’s first black history showcase in the last decade. The show was seamless, the students looked and sounded amazing!
Story Time
Had a great time reading books to children this morning during the Omicron Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s Storytime event highlighting the Harlem Renaissance.
Spirit of St. Louis Scholarship
“For the Community because we are the community,” as Real STL News says. So grateful to Van Theodorou with Worldnet Solutions for his donation through the The R. Whittington Foundation to the Spirit of St. Louis Scholarship! We were able to help clear the balances of Harris-Stowe seniors just in time for graduation. Van’s company is also looking for summer interns (paid positions) and has one full-time position available. For more information, message me and I will give you the contact information!
“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” -Martin Luther King Jr.
I am so excited to announce the Spirit of St. Louis Scholarship winner, Mr. Jordan Ross! Jordan is currently a sophomore at Harris-Stowe State University majoring in Business with an emphasis Marketing. He is from St. Louis, MO and graduated from Hazelwood Central High School. I work with Jordan a lot; we’ve used him for several HSSU videos and he is truly a great student. I could not be more excited to present the first Spirit of St. Louis Scholarship recipient.
This would not have been possible without all of our wonderful donors and the R. Whittington Foundation.
We felt it was important to share all the generous donors who made this scholarship possible:
Sean Spinks, Kristen Harris, Jordan Henderson, Ruby Smith, MATT-LAY Enterprises, INC. Rickey Whittington, World Net Solutions Inc., World Net Corporations, Devera Brock, Terri Butler, Pam Simmons, Sandra Murdock, Deborah Harvey and DBA Dents Express/Colors Express.
